  • The Tumblebug program is aimed at providing our youngest members (ages 1 - 6) with an age-appropriate introduction to gymnastics and movement. The program consists of five separate classes: Littlebugs, Busy Bees, Grasshoppers, Spiders and Crickets. All tumblebug classes helps children build gross motor skills, interpersonal skills, self-confidence, and they are plenty of fun!

Each level is designed to meet a child's developmental ability and social needs. Most classes are 45 minutes (including warm-ups) and run terms (Fall, Winter, Spring, & Summer); however students are allowed to enroll mid-session as space allows.

Placement in classes is primarily based on each child's needs and individual development. Please feel free to discuss class level with the instructors as needed. Trials are available, please call to schedule (415) 561-6260. Only classes with openings will take trial students.

    Littlebugs - ages walking until 3 1/2

light pink leotards, light blue t-shirts

This is an open format class that is child directed and parent supervised. Children have the opportunity to choose to join structured activities as well as openly explore in a safe environment. The gym is set up with various fun and challenging stations for the kids to climb, balance, roll, hang and generally have a great time. Instructors provide a voluntary "warm-up" at the parachute for kids who are ready and another closing activity to mark the end of class. This is a great way for little ones to burn off energy and gain movement skills at the same time.

    Busy Bees ages 3 1/2 - 4 1/2

light pink leotards, light blue t-shirts

This class is a bridge between the self-exploration class, Littlebugs, and the completely teacher directed Grasshoppers. Students at this level are taken on the equipment in groups of 6:1 with a coach and parent (as needed). A structured, but always fun, lesson is given and the children are exposed to more movement and gymnastics in a beginner class format. Parents are on hand to help kids with the transition and they work with the coaches to help their kids be self-directed class members.

    Grasshoppers ages 4 1/2 - 5 1/2

bright pink leotards, light blue t-shirts

Children in grasshopper classes are fully self directed and able to follow the coach without parental guidance. In these classes, we begin to focus more on specific beginning gymnastics moves and equipment while still incorporating plenty of obstacle courses; games and exciting skills that challenge and make a child feel confident about his/her physical abilities. Teachers work with kids in a 6:1 ratio preparing them for advancement to Crickets.

    Spiders ages 5 1/2 - 6

    light blue t-shirt

Spiders are boys specific classes and also require the ability to follow the coach without parental guidance. In these classes, we begin to focus more on beginning gymnastics moves and equipment, while still incorporating plenty of obstacle courses, games and exciting skills that challenge and make a child feel confident about his physical abilities and interpersonal skills. Teachers work with kids in a 7:1 ratio preparing them for advancement to Boy's Recreational classes.

    Crickets ages 5 1/2  - 6

    Lavender leotards

Crickets classes are most similar to our beginning recreational gymnastics classes. Class size ratios are 7:1 but the class is 60 minutes long which allows the kindergarten child to get used to the longer class. Crickets are good listeners and are preparing to join classes with the Girls Recreational or Boys Recreational classes when they are ready.

    Dress Code

As a member of SFG, your child is issued a class leotard or t-shirt to wear to class. Children wear leotards/t-shirts that represent the level of class they attend. It is important when a child moves up to purchase the corresponding uniform. A leotard recycling system is in place. You can trade in a used leotard for credit or purchase a used leotard for a discounted price. Please inquire at the front desk, sizes are limited. The following is a dress code for all children in classes:

Girls: Class leotard, with or with out biker shorts, no jewelry, long hair neatly pulled back into a ponytail or braid, short hair clipped up and out of eyes, bare feet or gymnastics shoes.

Boys: Class t-shirt, shorts or sweatpants (no buttons, zippers or baggy pants), no jewelry, long hair neatly tied back, bare feet or gymnastics shoes.
